ya know what i always wanted was an irish setter...i just love their color. they are a hyper breed...i believe they are good swimmers and love walks and good jogging partner...and LOVE kids...a peki is not the best family dog...nor a dashund...goldens can be. Anything hyper will need TONS of training! so u will need to put alot of time in to one. if ya have never trained a dog before I would recommened a trainer.

if you want a small dog a jack russell is VERY hyper. also labs, golden retrievers, pitbulls. if you really want a swimming buddy suggest a curly coated retriever. also a very sweet dog. border collies are also very playful and good with kids. though they may have herding issues. a pekinese prolly isnt a good idea only b/c of the money your going to spend on grooming. also its not going to be able to keep up as much as a slightly longer legged dog would. they tend to sort of waddle. lol. they also have breathing problems and running around alot is going to make them worse. a dashund wouldnt be able to keep a very fast pace either. great pyraneses' are absolutely wonderful dogs too very sweet. a husky would be quite playful and hyper and also willing to pull the kids around in a wagon if your so inclined! there are many dogs suited for a playful family.

Family dogs are avalible but the best are:

-Golden Retrievers

-Retrivers (any)

-Dashunds

-Bloodhounds

-German Shepards

...and any other BIG dog.

Companion dogs like Chihuahuas and Beagles or even Shih Tzus attach to only one person, and are small enough to die from a fall from little children so get a dog you expect to be big!

Dogs like Pit Bulls and Boxers are okay but they get very aggresive so watch out they might even bite.

Enjoy!

How big a dog do you want? If you really want a water dog, get a Newfoundland. All dogs can swim, some are just fonder of the water. If the most important thing is one to play with, try a shih tzu. I have one that is sixteen and still has a real sense of fun and adventure. And they're very affectionate and loving dogs.

Sounds to me like what you are looking for is a nice, family oriented dog who will be a welcome guest at area parks, lakes, etc. Do your research and find what dog best fits your family and lifestyle. Visit www.akc.org for breeds you have an interest in and look at the parent club website for more information. Every breed parent club has a breeder referral contact and will be more than happy to provide any information you require. Also, be sure to take your new family member to a good obedience/puppy socialization class. The American Kennel Club has a Canine Good Citizen program and many obedience clubs give this test at the conclusion of their classes. A well behaved dog is always an asset!

Get a doberman. I have had my dobbie for a little over a year now and she is full of life and very friendly towards everyone. She loves to play in the water but she will not go swimming in the water. They are very active dogs and are just great to have around. Just dont clip there ears I think they look better with them

Golden Retrievers are excellent companions for families who are active but can be a bit large. Have you looked at one of the newer breeds to the US: Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers? They are very similar to a miniature Golden Retriever with a lot of the same characteristics. Check them out.

Labrador Retriever! They're my favorite kind of dog! I have three and they are great swimmers. They are also hyper-but they know when it's time to stop and rest. I highly recommend this breed! No wonder they are the most popular dog in America and Canada!

You should do more research into dog ownership, training and everything else. If your only requirements are hyper and playful.. You are forgetting that there is much more to being with dogs and having them fit well into your family. I would rethink a dog if swimming and playing is what you want.

i used to have a weimeraner and she loved to swim and she was real hyper they all are they go crazy when you just through ice on the ground and it slides everywhere and they just love it they are good with kids too i think a weimeraner is a great family dog. they need excersise daily and if you don't want to walk them if yo live in a small neighborhood with out very many busy streets you could just let them go but 1st you have to make sure they know you and know their name or they are gone! but they are sweet and just beatiful dogs w/ big floppy ears. they are just sweet period. hope you fin a perfect dog hope this info helps

Check your local shelter, play with the dogs and see if one fits your needs.

BUT if you want a pure bred dog... try a Toy Fox Terrier

This is not a wimpy lap dog even if the word Toy is in it's name. Very smart and easy to train... our baby loves praise when he does what we ask him to.

We take ours camping, swimming in rivers and lakes, he plays fetch and he is high energy. However if we just want to sit and watch tv he has no problem with climbing on our laps and taking a nap.

This breed is compact and very easy to take care of.

Look thru this website it tells you the pros and cons of many breeds.

I recommend trying the link to the website I posted below. It has a cool test you can taketo see what percentage of the breeds are best for you based on the choices you picked in the test. Good Luck! :)

Look at theis website..

www.akc.org

All the breeds and their traits are listed there. Pick the one that's best suited for your family's lifestyle, and PLEASE, get it from a reputable breeder, not a pet sore or an ad in the local paper. Do your homework.

If you are looking for a bigger dog, may I suggest a doberman. They are very sweet, and playful. If you are looking for a small dog, I would say a chuhauhau puppy, or a maltese.
