Is my puppy lacking some kind of nutrition if he is always eating sticks, pine cones, etc when he goes out?

You have a teething baby and need to provide execise cew toys so it can cut it's teeth.
Nylabones, cow hooves, kongs, hard rubber balls and toys and hard miklbone treats.
Give that pup something to chew and help those new teeth come in, while saving your furniture and woodwork!
Pieces of stick can perforate a bowel or intestin and casue serious vet bills or death. Keep that baby safe.

At 12 weeks old a puppy is an explorer. He'll grab onto anything new and strange to him. I would watch that he doesn't get into too much stuff like that.
What you're thinking of as far as nutrition goes is when they eat their own feces/dirt,whatever. In that case there is a nutritional imbalance. But I think no worries yet. :)

No, just being a puppy, but I would recommend you not let him eat sticks or pine cones or any foreign objects they could get stuck in his throat or even in his bowls and could lead to serious problem and exspensive surgery.

My 8yr old Golden still tries to chew on sticks, rocks, hunks of wood. And I still take them away from her and tell her no. LOL She eats a high protein dog food, with minerals, so I don't think she's lacking anything. Relax, its just a dog thing, but do not allow her to chew on anything that isn't recommended by a pet store, noted pet supplier, or your vet. Enjoy your puppy.

Sorry I disagree with everyone else's answers. Your puppy is lacking something in his diet, and he is going natural to try and attempt to get what his body needs. I read all about this in a book I got on amazon, Woofing it down. the book talks about a homemade food diet, and says why dogs eat these kinds of things, to get the nutrition that they really need. I have been following this book, and I cook for my dog, and my dog never eats anything like grass, sticks or rocks anymore...

i wouldn't doubt it. if he is a puppy, he is probably curious about the world around him (or he might be teething). but be careful. sharp sticks and pine cones can damage his digestive track or get lodged in his throat and might send you and your puppy to an emergency trip to your vet :( make sure to keep an eye on him :)

Sounds pretty normal. But I'd keep the pine cones away in particular - the sharp points could harm his mouth, throat or digestive tract.

Get him items to chew that are especially for puppies. I heard you shouldn't let them chew rawhide. Just look for something at a pet or discount store and when you notice puppy chewing on something else, take whatever it is away and give him the chew you got just for him instead.

As long as you are feeding him a national brand of puppy chow, he's nutritionally fine. Puppies tend to chew ... that's what he is doing.

If your feeding him puppy chow he is getting the correct vitiamins. Hes probably teething and being a puppy.

He needs to chew on things since he is teething. Be careful what he picks up and swallows.
