Not all pet food is made equally. A lot of it is full of corn, by-products, dyes, unhealthy preservatives, filler grains and all sorts of nasty stuff. A lot of pet food companies are perfectly happy to dump cheap leftovers in. Will it kill your dog? No, it has to be nutritionally complete and safe to even be marketed. Is it healthy? Not by a long shot.

Corn is a low quality ingredient you never want to see in your pet food. Corn and low quality grains are two of the biggest culprits when it comes to food allergies in our pets.

Thankfully, there are some excellent dog foods being made these days that include organic, human grade ingredients rather than trash not fit for human consumption.

Examples of low quality foods to avoid: Anything you can find in a grocery store will be low end, Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Royal Canin, Pedigree, Kibbles n' Bits, Beneful, Ol'Roy.

Examples of high quality foods to look for: Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold, Canidae All Life Stages, Fromm Four Star, Merrick, GO Natural, Nature's Variety Prairie, Nature's Logic, Artemis Fresh Mix, Timber Wolf Organics.

Although the high quality foods are more expensive, you're getting what you're paying for. Less filler material means more concentrated nutrients... this means you typically need to feed far less of the high quality food than you would of the low quality one. Which also means less poop!

A great option is to go with an entirely grainless diet. Many of the high quality foods now put out grainless formulas. Some good grainless diet's include: Innova EVO, Wellness CORE, Blue Wilderness, Nature's Variety Instinct, Orijen, Fromm Surf & Turf, Now! and Sold Gold Barking At The Moon, Taste of the Wild.

Some of the high end foods can be found in common pet stores. Petsmart carries Blue Buffalo products (such as the excellent grain free diet Blue Wilderness). Petco carries Wellness and Solid Gold. If you can't find a food, most of the high quality food brands have websites with store locators on them.

Remember that foods should be switched gradually, especially when switching to a higher quality one, so as not to upset tummies.

Another option for feeding dogs is to feed raw. This is something that should be thoroughly researched before being attempted:

I think by "commercial" the video was talking about foods readily available anywhere, such as grocery stores. Those foods are substandard and aren't to be trusted. A premium or ultra-premium food (like Wellness) purchased at a pet store or farm supply is different in that it's much easier to track where the meats in those food came from (not just un-named "meat by-product meal"), and ingredients are overall a much higher quality.

Look at the list of ingredients. The first ingredient should not be corn.

Dogs do not digest corn or cornmeal. Do not buy foods that have that listed as the first ingredient.

Purina One is pretty good. The costco brand dog food is also very good. Even the Trader Joe's dog food is very good. Don't buy Alpo or any of those other cheap dog foods.

Worst dog foods are Alpo, any store brand (except Costco and Trader Joe's) and pedigree. Worst dog foods have corn or cornmeal as a filler.

Proper training and socialization are some of your dog's most basic needs. Learn how to set a basic foundation before you begin to train your dog https://tr.im/BNwiW

At first, dog training can seem pretty overwhelming, especially if this is your first dog. Truth be told, training your dog is a very big project. However, if you take it step by step, you will find the task to be far less daunting.

~ optidog is not good

Pedigree, Beneful, Purina, Iams, Bil-Jac, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Diamond, Eagle Pack, Alpo, Kibbles N Bits, Royal Canin, Nutro, grocery store brands (like Ol Roy), Cesar are just some that are ones to STAY AWAY from. These are not quality foods and have very poor ingredients.

i just thought i would suggest,

for a tin of tuna at Asda its about 29p.

and a cheap pack of rice which depending on the size of dog would last a few days. about 50p.

why not feed it rice and fish. its healthy and cheap and you know whats in there. other than that my dog seems to enjoy pal dog food not sure why but he never leaves abit. what ever makes him happy suits me. A happy dog is a healthy one as they say. hope i helped .

You get what you pay for. Also, look at ingredients. Food with lots of fillers (corn, animal parts, etc.) are not as good.

We feed our dog Nutra Max and he is very healthy. He is black and has an amazing coat...So shiny and perfect. No white flakes or anything...
