For a change of pace...

Here's a mysterious animal that was recently photographed. Is it a coydog? A wolf dog? A dog with mange? A species unknown to science?

What is up with the ears? Have you ever seen a dog with erect ears whose ear position is so wide apart? I imagine this animal could raise those ears a bit more when at alert, but even so, those ears are awful wide apart.

I agree with the poster above me...the body resembles a lion...but that hump on it's shoulders looks like a hyena....very strange looking. It doesn't look like a full coyote or wolf, but mixed with another animal....could that even happen?? It's quite a mystery, I think!

I think its a clever hoax, trick of photography... some new sensation that people want to get others to believe. While I see the photograph its remarkably hazy and far away that gives the photographer the ability to do what he wants with the image and then blame it on poor photography. The head shot of the one dog is clearly not the same animal in the hazy picture. The head shot photo is a Coy-dog. The dog with the hump and widely spaced ears could be a number of things. The body does look to oddly porportionate to be canid... even with mange. The leg placement of the dog is distinctly feline. So to me someone took a Mountain Lions body and put on a mixed dogs head in photoshop class... then said HEY look what I got. It very well could have been a Mountain lion walking the rivers edge.... thats also a huge clue, first the phtographer says hes walking along the St. John's river which is in the southern part of the US (to be exact it only flows in Florida).... then the article says the picture recently came in from the Milwaukee River's edge(that only flows in the western part of Wisconsin) which is in the upper Midwest of the US thats a huge leap and a very bad geo- graphical error on the part of the article writer... its just a hoax I am sure.

I tend to agree with texelgirl2, and question the authenticity of the photograph. Something about the head makes me think it was grafted onto a different body, which I agree looks more feline than canine. The feet are hidden by the railroad tracks, so you can't get any notion from those. So, I remain unconvinced that it's a real photo at all. That was my first impression, and after reading tg2's comments and looking at the photo again, the feeling is even stronger.

Wow, that's some freaking looking canine!

The ears are definitely weird, and the hair hump back reminds me of a cyote!

I'm guessing a timberwolf/shepherd mix .. Wow. Weird.

I agree with Nandina and Iggy, looks like a wolf mix, most likely with mange judging by the tail.

I'll agree with a wolf/dog mix, with a bad case of mange.

It's freaky looking whatever it is...

Looks to *ME* something like a Hyena with the ears, and small head.

Hard to say!

it is a timber wolf, they look just like this, and he may be crossed with a German Shepherd, but mainly looks like a timber wolf........scruffy and hungry.'

this is the exact way they look in the wild, but with alittle less hair around the face, that is why it is probably crossed.
