Question:
Why is it that?

People make harsh generaliztions about certain breeds of dogs wether they are mixed with a certain breed or if it's purebred? I'm a firm believer that a dog's actions are a result of their environment and up-bringing. The breeds most commonly bashed are pittbulls, Cane Corso, Persa Canario, Rottweillers, there's many more but I heard more sweet stories and have experienced very sweet encounters with these breeds. I welcome your opinions otherwise I wouldn't ask, but please have the courtesy to behave maturely when answering this question, You are only making yourself look ridiculous when you act like an A$$! Thank you to all of those who answer.

I totally agree with you. I am getting so sick of people's lack of reponsibility when it comes to dogs and their actions. I concede that there are some cases where nothing can be done - if a dog kills a child it really should be put down. But what's the go with demonising a whole breed of dog? I would be heartbroken if I had to get rid of my dog because people thought he was bad by association. People are really shooting themselves in the foot when they refuse to admit that they were wrong...I have a mastiff x great dane who is so gentle. Since he was a baby I have made sure that he was socialised, I take his food off him, and have trained him from a young age. I take pride in that - and if he was aggresive I would take responsibility for that to. He has never been around children without supervision and never will be, and every child that comes here is told very firmly about how he is to be treated. I look after his interests and I can guarentee that he will never be in the newspaper for mauling a child or any other living thing. Sorry about the rant, but I feel so strongly about this and I am glad someone has the brains to see things a little more clearly!

It happens to all bigger breeds it seems. IT was German Shepherds, then Dobermans, then Rotties and now it is anything that looks like a generalized term "Pit Bulls."

I think the media plays a big part in it and owners play a bigger role too. These powerful dogs end up in the wrong hands of people who want some kind of status symbol. They want a mean looking and mean acting dog to show that they are not ones to be messed with and those are the ones you hear about.

When people keep hearing things on tv that this type of dog killed someone, bite someone or chased someone and they hear those stories over and over again, it strikes fear into them. They are idiots and I mean the actual defination...they are uneducated. Very rarely do I hear about a Pit Bull doing something good.

Dogs are a reflection of their owners.

Environment and up bringing isn't always the case. The aggression some dogs tend to have is the cause from poor breeding practices. People not bothering to do temperament testing on their dogs prior to breeding them. Aggression can and will be bred down to the offspring from the parents. For instance my neighbor had a mixed breed named Roscoe. He was a Aussie/ border collie mix i think. That dog was so well behaved and never needed a leash. He loved everyone and everything he met. He was your one of a kind perfect dog. After Roscoe passed away my neighbor adopted a mixed breed shephard Collie from a friend who's dogs had puppies. Valley looks very similar to Roscoe. They got Valley when she was a little fur ball at 8 weeks of age. As a puppy they took her everywhere to socialize her. And raised her the same exact way Roscoe was raised. Valley can be very unpredictable. The groomer said it would be best if she were tranquilized while she was being groomed because she gets so stressed out and unpredicable. Don't you think that Valley acts that way from poor breeding practices? Why do you think there are so many dogs in the pound?

EDIT: I had a Boxer for 11 years. She now resides at the Rainbow Bridge. She was my Angel who looked up to me in life. Now she my angel who looks over me from Heaven.

I understand how you feel and truly believe that people make a good dog bad. I had a Huge Chow Chow that loved children and was part of a program that brought animals into the children's ward at various hospitals, and you would not believe the number of people who were amazed at how gentle my Cinnamon Bear was with these children. He always seemed to know which child was the sickest and would always spend more time with that particular child. In one case he spent almost 4 hours curled up next to a little girl who was close to dying from cancer and was jerking from the medication she was receiving. He just lay there and licked her hand when she was at her worst. He passed away at the age of 8 years and is sorely missed. I currently have 2 Pure Bred Miniature Pincher's and they are just adorable little dogs.

Some people are uneducated. The media loves to publize stories of those breeds attacking people. Think about it ever see a cocker spaniel bite all over the news ?One of the #1 drug detection dogs is a pitbull. Several of these breeds are used for search & rescue, service dogs, ect.... Your right aggressive dogs are due to irresponsible owners. I was bitten by my father's Dobie as a small child . It was his fault for leaving me & the dog unattended. Education is the key to preventing dog bites, not bsl.

i TOTALLY agree with you. Iam a proud german shepherd owner and have heared stories of communities banning this beautiful breed because it is "vicious". Its UNBELIEVEBLY!! you cant judge a breed by the acts of one dog. German shepherds, like all dogs, have a sweat side and are very loving.

glad someone else feels the same way as me!

also people shouldnt put down mix breeds. ("mut" is unneaded). its still a creature and some can be very loyal and friendly dogs.

OMG! I had a Boxer that looked just like yours! I actually have one in a puppy class that looks like him too! I have Boston Terriers now. Boxer's and Boston Terriers are considered bully breeds, can you believe that!

A bully is not born but molded by humans. Unfortunately, too many people have abused dogs of these breeds and have made it hard for us who have wonderful dogs and are responsible pet parents.

I agree. I hate when people make harsh comments about a certain breed of dog, and then call themselves dog lovers. People don't understand that it is the dog's owners who raise them to be violent.

That video is so touching. I think people who think of pit bulls as violent dogs need to wach that. They are so vicous, right?

If pit bulls and any other breed of dog are brought up in violent conditions, they will most likely be violent. And it is not their fault what so ever. If they are brought up in loving conditions, they will be like every other calm house dog.

I totally agree. I own a Staffordshire Bullterrier and he is the softest dog you could ever meet.

Sometimes though you still get those people that turn around or cross the street when you come close.

I find that it is generally the smaller yappy dogs that you need to watch out for.

I agree, people make dogs bad because of the way they are brought up.

I have a white german shepherd and everyone asks me what she is, saying she's lovely, when i tell them she's a shepherd they back off and go 'oh they're very cross aren't they' - sooo annoying! She's the friendliest dog ever, so playful and cuddly and i'm so sick of people saying that these kind of dogs are 'bad' dogs!

Your dog is gorgeous!!

Most people just don't care enough to bother learning about the breeds the media is bashing and just figure that it's a breed thing. They also tend to believe a lot of myths (i.e. lock jaw).
