NO!!!! BAD! WRONG! STUPID!!! Never but ANY dog from a pet store!!!!!!!!!OR ON-LINE!!!!

Did you get that???

Norwich & Norfolk are VERY hard to come by-only 400 or so a year coast to coast. Their breeders are VERY particular about where they let their dogs go.

If you can't decide which breed you're interested in,you aren't ready anyway. Go to an AKC show & meet the breeds. Read the standard. Talk to responsible breeders.

And...start saving up $$$ now.

Find a good breeder by going to www.akc.org or talking to people at dog shows. You can also find info about the Norfolk and Norwich breed clubs on the akc site - they probably have a rescue group where you can get an older dog for less money.

DON'T go to a pet shop or buy one off the Internet!!!! You'll pay top dollar for what is usually a poor quality puppy mill dog. And you'll be supporting one of the cruelest industries in the country. The breeding animals are kept in deplorable conditions. They probably haven't been vaccinated against contagious diseases or tested for any health or temperament problems or genetic diseases - that costs money and cuts into their profits. A female is often bred every time she comes into heat. When her poor little body can't take it any more, she is often clubbed in the head and tossed into a dumpster or an open ditch. Most puppy mills ship their pups to pet stores at wholesale prices and many pups die before they even get there. These "breeders" have figured out that they can use the Internet to ship a dog directly to the customer and thus make more money by cutting out the middleman. If you buy a dog from out of state, good luck getting your money back if there's something wrong with the pup. These people count on you becoming instantly attached to the poor little guy and being willing to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars at the vet to treat whatever is wrong with him.

Many people love the idea of owning a dog but one thing that they have to keep in mind often times, is that the dog needs to be trained. While the pet may look heart-breakingly cute when it's in a shelter or at the pound, picking out the dog is only the first part of the relationship between dog owner and the animal. Many people don't understand that they have to put time and effort into socializing the dog.

An unsocialized dog will intimidate others, tear up the home, and will create an environment that can become so bad that the it will have to be returned. Many times when dogs have to be returned to shelters or to other resources, it will end up euthanized, which is very heartbreaking. All of this can be spared if a person learns the various techniques in order to socialize the dog.

One thing that they have to understand is that the he wants to be told what to do. It's in the canine nature to follow a leader. The dog will be more than willing to obey the leadership of its master. Here's a look at some common techniques that are used in dog training:

"Dog Whispering"

This is a technique that has been around for a while, but gained national notoriety over the last 10 years. Some people might hear this term and wonder how in the world whispering to a dog can train it! Whispering isn't meant to be taken literally in this case. As trainers have shown, whispering is a term that refers to connecting with a being or an entity on a very deep and almost spiritual level. When it comes to dog training techniques, dog whispering involves careful observation of the dog's behavior and actions.

It literally entails getting inside the mind and the behavior system of the canine. When a person uses dog whispering techniques, they interact with the dog on the canine level. Again, one the most common mistakes that people make is treating the dog like a small human being.

"Reward Training"

Reward training is very simple and it's one of the older tricks that works. This is a simple method of training the dog by positive reinforcement. Once he does what it is told to do, it receives a treat. How this works is that the dog owner must entice the dog towards the treat. Once the canine develops awareness for the treat, it develops a strong desire for it. When the desire for it is extremely strong, the dog owner pulls back. Then the dog receives a command and when the dog obeys the command, it receives the treat. The object is to make the dog associate a treat with the command.

"Clicker Training"

Other dog training techniques include one that is similar to reward training, which is called clicker training. How this works is that the clicker is incorporated to get the dog's attention. The clicker is clicked as a form of communication with the dog. It learns that there is a command or reward associated in conjunction with the clicker. Many people claim that this is fun, and they actually make a game with the dog by using the clicker for their dog training tasks.

"Ultrasonic Whistle"

Last, a relatively new form of dog training technique is called the ultrasonic whistle. This works because the ultrasonic sound is only heard by the dog. When the owner is trying to communicate a command, or stop the dog from barking, they will blow on their whistle when they want to communicate a command to the dog. The benefit of this is that the humans can't hear this noise, but the dog can hear it, and they will learn to associate the sound with a command.

Dog training techniques aren't hard to incorporate, but they are something that absolutely must be incorporated from the time a dog owner brings their new dog home. No matter how old or how young the dog is, they will need training. Once they are trained properly, they will be a wonderful addition to one's family.

Please consider rescue. Start your search on the internet for breed specific rescue. Pet stores often purchase the dogs from puppy mills and the conditions there are horrible and their health is often just as bad. I'm SURE there is Norwich and/or Norfolk terrier rescue.

All puppies are cute, they may grow up to be substandard to the breed. You never know what you are getting from a pet store. Registration papers are no guarantee of quality. I would try to find a reputable breeder and buy from them. Research the breed standards and then ask breeders about the parents. Ask to see pictures of the parents, that will tell you more than a puppy picture. You can pay a breeder for the pup and shipping for less than pet shop prices.

Please don't even consider buying a puppy from a pet store. Puppies from pet stores invariable come from puppy mills, which are horrible places that churn out poorly bred, unhealthy puppies.

second the above!

plz Do Not buy from petshops /petstores; the pups come from "bunchers", who buy whole litters [often underage], keep them for a week or so, & sell them 1 here, 2 there, as calls come in for a "F black Lab" or a "M Yorkie".

bunchers get their pups from the lowest of the low in breeders: puppy-mill operators, who keep dams & sires, AND their pups, in often horrific conditions.

don't U wonder WHY the pup in Ur Maryland town is from Idaho, or Arkansas?

it's to make it HARD to check on the conditions they were bred/reared in.

nobody wants U to drop in & meet mom-dog or dad-dog; they want U to pay them the $$, & go away.

& if Ur pup has health problems later, they do NOT want to hear abt it.

============

legitimate breeders WANT TO MEET -U-, & have no trouble showing U where dam & litter lived. they have VET RECORDS, they have Genetic Screeening on dam & sire Both!, they have healthy clean pups in clean surroundings.

THEY HAVE MOM-DOG THERE - do Not buy if there's no mom-dog.

and please: Never! take home a pup under 56 days age [8 full weks]. it causes serious behavior problems that can be lifelong...

============

breed-rescue is GREAT! ask for details of the dog's behavior: did they live with kids? cats? do they chase small animals [common terrier-behavior, "predatory"]

they will have -Lived With- this dog for weeks, if not months - the foster knows the dog.

"past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior" - get a dog who will FIT Ur family.

best of luck - happy hunting!

OHMIGOSH, those dogs are SO CUTE! But listen, you should try and find one on http://www.petfinder.org. They have so many pedigreed dogs for adoption and you can search by zipcode. Rescue a homeless doggy and it will be your best friend for life! It also guarantees you a place in Heaven. :-)
