In my experience, the dog breeds which are the least likely to develop human aggression issues are the Pug, Beagle, English Bulldog, and Boston Terrier. I haven't really seen an example of any of those breeds that I would say had a serious aggression issue, though I have met more than a few nervous Beagles. Well-bred Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Pit Bulls, and Greyhounds would be right up there as well. On the other hand are the breeds which are most likely to be aggressive. I have never had a pleasant experience with a Yorkie. In fact, of the 50 or so Yorkies that I have encountered, I would say all 50 had some sort of aggression issue. Chow Chows, Akitas, and Chihuahuas are right up there as well. But, I would say that the most aggressive dog breeds are the various breeds of Terrier from Scotland, the Scottish Terrier, West Highland White Terrier, Cairn Terrier, Dandie Dinmont Terrier, and Skye Terrier. Scotties and Westies in particular are very bitey dogs.

Actually any large dog would intimidate someone to stay off your property, usually just the size of the dog is enough to scare someone. I would research different breeds see what breed would best fit your life style, only you will know the answer to that.
I personally love the Rottweiler they are wonderful dogs, I had one for 12 years, if i lived in the country i would have bought another one, but since i live in the city i figured a smaller breed would fit my life style better.
But keep in mind if you have a large dog it will need room to run, and it will need to go on walks. it can't just sit and protect your home.

It all depends on the person, not all dog breeds are right for everyone. And a lot of times breeds such as my personal favorite (Pitbulls) have ended up in the hands of the wrong owners and that's why idiots like that have ruined their name. Do your homework before getting a dog, don't just go by what you "think" may be right for you, before doing some major research on the breed.

if you want a dog to protect your home then I would get a Rottweiler or a Doberman, or possibly a Pit Bull. but you have to be careful to make sure you are ready to take on such a powerful breed. if you are looking for a protector in a smaller package I would recommend a Jack Russel Terrier or an Irish Terrier.
And if you are looking for a dog that will invite a burglar in and show him where the valuables are a Golden Retriever is the way to go :-)

I have 2 cattle dogs because Iam alone alot (married to truck driver) I do suggest you get a dog that will be exercised a lot regardless of what it be also think about a Jack Russel. Terriers are great little family dogs and watch dogs. The dogs tempermant depends on you and how you treat them my cattle dogs are very spoilt and come inside to sit with me but also they are there to protect me and our house and they do that very well they also get on very well with my grand kids.Whatever breed you are going to get consider that to own a dog you must exercise it and be kind to it.You get back what you give.

You shouldnt buy a dog purely for protecting your house. Most breeds of dogs instinctively protect their surroundings.
Check out: http://dogtime.com/ there is a great Dog matchup quiz on there. All there is a lot of information about all breeds of dogs. Check it out, I highly recommend it.
Please reconsider buying a dog though if you only want it for protection.

I would not get a dog just to protect my home since my pets are part of my family. If that's not the case with you,I suggest you get a recording of a barking dog that is set off like an alarm.

if well trained, german shepherds are famous for being defenders, but you have to train them to stop on command
also poodles ive heard are very good alert dogs
id have to say those are the 2 best in my opinion for alerting and guarding, however, do not get a german shepherd if you can not discipline dogs (not be mean and hurt them, just discipline) if you have anger problems with training, or give up easily, or arent too in to walking and exercising, i wouldnt recommend a dog, but if you must, get a poodle out of the 2 choices, or another dog someone might recommend

Choosing a specific breed of dog is a personal choice of your likes and dislikes. There are many sites that help you to choose based on how you answer certain questions. I find that these questionares are quite helpful. One that I like is....
They are fun to take and it is interesting to see just what kind of breed is recommended based on your answers. But remember, local animal shelters are filled with mixed breeds that need and deserve a loving home. Once you find what breed you would like to adopt check local rescues and see what is available. Good luck!
