Walking my 2 dogs is an ordeal, which makes me not want to do it. I have a 70 pound lab and a 30 pound border collie. Can I use a 2-way coupler to walk dogs so different in size? Also would it be possible to use a retractable leash with a coupler, or do I need to use a standard leash? Should I get a 12 inch or 24 inch coupler- does it make a difference? Thank you.

you could use a coupler on two different sized dogs, i would go for the longer one due to the difference in size of the dogs ... i have used couplers with retractable leashes only a couple times because it was a hassle ... i have used a 2-way coupler and a 3-way coupler ... i personally found regular leashes were the best ... one leash in each hand, one dog on each side and keep walking ... i found with the coupler it gave the dogs too much leeway to zig and zag and get tangled up ... you can try it as a coupler is not very expensive but i think you will find it will be more of an ordeal walking your dogs with a coupler ...

DON'T get a coupler and use it with either a standard or retractable leash. The retractable is a bad idea from the start, and even a 4' leash will be too long with the size coupler you'd need. They sell them with leash attached if you want to give it a try, but I agree that if your dogs don't walk well together on separate leads, then putting them together might even make it worse

The size difference wouldn't matter with a coupler, but if it's such an ordeal to walk them, then I doubt a coupler would even help you. Training would be a better way to ensure that both the dogs and yourself end up actually enjoying the walks. If your dogs see you as a trustworthy, responsible leader, then they will be a dream on lead.

Also, please do NOT use a retractable leash on a 70Lbs dog!!!! I had a CAT that got scared and bolted while on a retractable leash and she actually BROKE the metal clasp on the leash that attached to her harness!!! She was only about 10Lbs! Not to mention many dogs have been hit by cars because their owners were distracted and the dog wandered onto the street. Everyone always says, 'oh I keep my eye on my dogs at all times' but life always throws us curve balls, so why take the risk to begin with?

In twenty + years in dogs - I have never known of a situation where walking dogs on a coupler was easier than walking dogs on two leashes. To walk well on the coupler the dogs have to get use to it and have good leash manners. If the dogs have good leash manners then it shouldn't be hard to just walk then on two leashes.

couplers are great for walking two well leash trained dogs instead of using two leashes

but again the dogs need to be well trained and bvest if trained to heal

a coupler will not help at all in your situation you should think of investing in training for your dogs

also both of these breeds need a LOT of excercise and freadom to move around which a coupler would not provide

are you sure your dogs are getting proper excercise

You should get the longer coupler to accommodate the size difference in your dogs. It should work fine that way. Most couplers work with the retractable leashes, too.. Check at the store where you buy this one to see if this one will.

Do not.waste your momey ona coupler right now. In order for the coupler to work both have to be trained very well and they need to ne able to work together. One of them or you will get hurt. I think you should invest in training collars. Remember that not all dogs respond to the same collars. Work with one dog at a time.
