Question:
Can You Help Me Name My New, All Black Great Dane?
anonymous
2008-01-21 21:49:58 UTC
I just brought an all black MALE Great Dane puppy home a couple hours ago! *yay!*
I need a special name... I've been waiting to get a Dane all my life.

I need a bold name, as one of the main reasons I got him is to scare off intruders.

So far, these are a couple I have in mind:

Falkor (Never Ending Story~Luck Dragon)
Phantom
Thor (protector from Evil Spirits)

Which one do you like best?
Do you have any other ideas?
Thanks!

I'm so excited for you, so you finally got a dane. I was starting to wonder when you were going to get one, but it's great that you did so much research before you got him.

Anyways to answer your question, I've always thought Titus would be a powerful name for a male dane, the only problem is me and my husband have a deal. I get to name the females and he gets to name the males, and he still hasn't named one Titus.

Added: Let us know when you get a picture of him up.

Wow, Terry really has a list going! Dang!

I like great danes too, my mom has some, they are such big babies (not that I'm saying your's won't scare people away, they sure will)

A lot of people are scared of great danes, but they are actually (normally) gentle, even-tempered, sweethearts.

We had one named Czar, he was black with his ears cropped. He was definitely a guard dog, he didn't really like people, he would bite if we were not around. He got that way because he had so much trauma in his life, when he was a pup (almost grown though) he had his nose run over with a 4 horse trailer, there are some other things that happened to him I can't remember at the moment, he was mom's dog.

We had another one named Ceasar, he was really nice, although he didn't like one of mom's cousins. LOL

Anyway, I like Phantom, but you have my permission to name him Czar or Ceasar

LOL :-)

So you decided on a Great Dane instead of a boerboel. Danes are great dogs. I just got another boerboel yesterday, and I'm head over heels for this little guy. I named him Torque, and he's so cute. http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1423/9734610/18133705/299793494.jpg

Anyways.... For Danes, I like the old fashioned names best. Like Duke, Astro, Apollo, Bryson, Titan, Merlin, Kane.

Hero.

Warrior.

Sampson.

Eagle.

Flag.

I think your man would love one of these...

BTW, I had help naming a neighborhood cat, solid black, that 'adopted me' last summer ~~ I got a very nice response, too, and finally settled on Shadow.

Cool way to shop around for a great Dane name!

Thor is a good one.

Mine is named Duke. It's good to name them with a one syllable name, or one that can be shortened to one syllable. It is more commanding. Male Danes need to grow up knowing that you are their master because they will naturally test your authority and try to become the 'alpha'. Don't let that happen. Be firm (never cruel) and make him do what you say when you say it. Happily reward him when he obeys and correct him when he does not. I've seen male Danes become unruly when not raised right.

Also, he needs to obey everyone in your family. If he feels he is above someone, he may snap at them; not what you want in a 160 lb dog.

I like Thor out of your 3 names. I also like the name Jet that someone else suggested. Here are some more:

Stallion

Onyx

Cole (Coal)

Vinny - like a bouncer or "tough guy" name

Why name him anyway? You'll just probably end up calling him Handsome :)

Congrats!!!

Please don't name him Thor. Everybody does it~

My dane is named Sampson, although most of the time I call him Handsome, Mommy's Boy, or Smushy-Face. Uhhh- he's not scary, he's a big baby. Although I guess if a stranger saw him they would be intimidated at first.

Other names we were tossing around included Tank, King, Dozer (bull dozer, plus he is a sleepy-head).

I really like it when my clients name their pet after their interest.

High School football coach; "Punt"

Math Teacher: "Algebra"

Outdoor guy: "Canoe"

Fav Soft drink: "Tab"

I like the name BRONSON.

"Bronson" is Greek for "Son from the black-haired mother."

Is his mom black-haired? - If yes, this would fit perfectly.

With enough use, you could also modify it as "Son!" when you call him.
