I would put up found posters and if that didn't work put it in the lost and found part of the newspaper.

Well thank you for helping protect the animal world today!!

With no collar - I would suggest the following steps (with your parents permission of course!)

1. YOu already provided water - GOOD JOB! Did he drink a lot? Was he REALLY thirsty? Really thirsty may mean that he had been out for a while - how does his health look? Clean coat? Bright eyes? No goop, no bugs...itching? Biting? If you feel the dog looks dirty, sick - you should take him to a vet to make sure things are all ok and A LOT animals also have Microchips which list their owners name, address and telephone number and these chips can be scanned at any vets office usually.

2. If you think that he has NOT been out for long due to the look of him, and If you have a leash at home, walk the dog around the area you found it - he may have just wandered out to his front yard and decided to follow you :) and may take you right back to his house :) Try around the time people usually get home from work 4-6ish cause that is when they usually notice there pet made it out!

3. If these steps do not prevail - post an ad on your local Craigslist page and start working on FOUND signs! Also - notify your local Humane Society or Shelter as the owners may be calling there looking for their pets

Good Luck!

Posters are a good idea, but many times a dog can get quite far from home in just a matter of hours. Many newspapers will run a lost dog ad for free. You might want to check there. I know when I lost my dog the first place, besides driving around calling him, was the shelters and newspapers.

Ok first calm down, second yes put some posters up or put an add in the news paper, if no one calls or comes to get him then if your parents let you you can keep him or if not, you can walk up near the street he started following you and knock on someones door and ask if they know whoes dog it is. there are lots of things you can do, sell him, or keep him, put an add in the paper, walk around looking for lost dog posters, Oh and see if has just been washed if he has or he doesn't smell bad then somebody must own him. and this is fun too, you can name him while he is staying with you, thats what I did when I found a dog, LOL we named him Fred johnson so make a name for him and don't worry.

You did a good thing by giving him water. Here's the next step...

Take him to the vet. They'll scan him for a microchip. If he has one, he can be returned to his riteful owner. If not, either follow the vet's further instructions, or you could put up found dog posters that include a picture of the dog, when the dog was found, where the dog was found, your phone number, and your email.

Best of luck!!! ♥

Just to add to all the great suggestions, if he is someone's dog, then he may by microchipped.

My dog has a chip and if she ever gets lost, they could identify me as her owner if they took her to a vet or the SPCA.

You might try that and get a hit. If not, signs, Craigslist postings and calling the local animal shelters and SPCA definitely helps.

However, if no one claims him and you aren't able/allowed to care for him/keep him, you can contact the SPCA to find him a good home. That's where we got our dog. They get adopters all all the time and most of the dogs that are there go to good families within days.

Hope this helps and good luck!

geez. r u crazy?? dont u dare put him back. put up lost dog signs. give him dog food. o and the MOST IMPORTANT PART.

this works all the time. if u have a leash use that or some type or rope. tie it to his collar and lead him to the street u found him and go door to door around that street and ask ppl if they know whos dog it is. thats what happend last time i found a stray dog. turned out the dogs house was on that same street i found it on.

good luck

well if you cant take care of the dog you should contact your local animal shelter and maybe the dog has a animal chip in it where the animal shelter could scan it and find out the owners.

Or you could take a picture of the dog and put it on posters and hang it up.

Give him some fresh water and food and a shady area, i don't recommend letting a lost dog into your house because he may have rabies or fleas and will get them in your house especially if he is a stray.

I recommend if no one claims him take him to a shelter or if you want to keep him take him to a local vet and get him checked out.

If he isn't friendly don't go near him and call a local shelter because if he is to bite you, you could contract rabies and need a shot.

If there is an animal control in your area call and give them all the infor. If not you might call the local police-NOT 911, but their business number. If your committed to finding the owner call the local vet clinic and then put up posters. Good Luck

Take the dog to a near by vet office, they will check for a microchip, and alot of vets have a holding area where they keep the pet until the owner calls them. If there is a micro chip it might have the current owners info on it!

First you need to talk to your parents and see if you can hang on to the dog for a week. Put up flyers in the area he was found in.

If no one has responded in a week contact the ACO to have the dog taken to a shelter. Fortunately friendly dogs that are small have a decent adoption rate.

Call the humane society and tell them in case someone calls looking for him, and you can put up a posting on petfinder, but the posters will help too. Good luck!

Check with your local pound first to see if someone has lost their pet. If you can't get a lead there, put posters up and an ad in the paper.

Call your local animal control or shelters to see if anyone reported losing their dog, also you can go to petfinder and post an ad in their classified section that you found a dog. Putting up flyers is also another good idea,

you should definately call your local dog wardens office or humane society and fill out a found dog report. i currently work at a dog shelter and we find many dogs this way because hopefully their owner filled out a lost report. and they can match the two up! i would also put up a few flyers where you found the dog or around that area! hope this helps

Put posters around and list time and date me was found! you are very generous to do that and you are very kind!! in my opinion dont put him back as he can gfet injured! maybe you should get 1 visit to the vet to see if anything's wrong with him! if you can...keep him as it would be a favour of you to him...or put him in a shelter dont put him back in the street! also you should clean him up! maybe his owners be looking for hiM! and good luck!

contact thr closest animal shelter and tell them that you found a dog... if you dont want to give it to the shelter then give them informaiton on the puppy like color etc. that way if the owner tgoes to the shelter to find the pup, they can give the shelter the info on their puppy and the shelter can then tell them where to contact you with their puppy.. also, maybe go to the neighborhood the dog was found and go door to door asking, or make posters in that area. Good luck.

Does he seams hungry? is he dirty? does he look like he hasn't been groomed in a long time? etc.

If he seams to be a well maintained dog then put up some signs at your convenience store and bus stops of your neighborhood. His owners must be going crazy looking for him. If he seams to be abandoned you may want to alert your local dog shelter, they will give him medical attention and if you want to keep him they will be glad to hand him over to you.

Good luck.

Call your local humane society. Chances are if its someone's wanted pet, they will have called around. You can take it to the shelter and they will check if it is microchipped.

If you can possibly keep it at your home, that would be its best bet. If you cannot, take the dog to your local shelter or call for animal control to come pick it up.

This happened to me a few weeks ago. contact the vets in your area, put up posters, and make sure to ask people in kennels if they had someone looking for a dog.

Contact your local animal control office and tell them that you have found him.

They can advise you on whether to bring him in or to keep him until owners can be located.

Don't put him back on the street.

definitely take him home so he can be safe!! Put up signs where you found him. You can also go to the pound and let them know you found him so when his owners look for him they can find him. You could also take him for a walk near where you found him. Craigslist is also great for getting help finding his real home. good luck!!

Call Animal Control and have them pick him up. He may have a microchip and they will have the tools to trace it. Also, the owners may be checking with the shelter for him.
