there is no "best" place regardless of what you will probably get as answers. The best place is any place you feel comfortable with whether it be PetSmart or PetCo or a private grooming salon or your local vet.
What you should consider is how comfortable you are with certain things such as whether you are comfortable with leaving your pet for a couple of hours with your groomer or if you are comfortable with your dog being in a kennel or if you prefer him not to be. Are you comfortable with him being blow dried even if he doesnt like it or would you prefer they leave him damp to keep his stress to a minimum. Some customers do not understand why we groomers take so long sometimes to groom because they dont realize that your pets safety and comfort are our top priority. If a pet is too uncomfortable they will give the dog as many breaks as needed.
Always make sure to go over the specifics of the grooming process and let your groomer know exactly what you are okay with up front and you will make the groom easier for you the groomer and your pet.
The largest argument you commonly will hear is that petco or petsmart or any major company will not treat your pet as well as private groomers but that is incorrect so overlook the misconception. The larger companies just work with more animals and therefore can take a little longer than a private salon or the vet so make sure to have your pet groomed early in the morning or in the evening if you go with the retail salons to get your dog groomed faster and with more time to spend on your dog.

As a dog groomer i can tell you that if you don't have a good recomendation from family or friends then you should seek out a PetSmart or PetCo. The reason i recomend them is because of their corperate safety requiretments they have. Groomers must have specified training and follow strict safety rules. For both the pet and themselves. They will require that you pet be current on its shots. Some people think that the shot requirements are excessive but if your dog came down with Parvo or Kennel Cough your going to raise hell to get them to pay the vet bill so really they are protecting your pet and themsleves. Smart business move. Some small groomers have little or no real experiance and think they can just learn grooming from a book or from working as an assistant with someone else. Thats not alwasy the best way to go because small time groomers sometimes cut corners or engage in dangerous pratices.
Plus at PetSmart and PetCo you can observe the pet being groomed. Most of those little mom and pop places do it behind closed doors and might abuse your pet when no one is looking.
Call around, ask other dog owners and also ask your vet. They know who cuts hair and who cuts up the dogs.
And remember the groomer is dealing with a live animals and accidents can and do happen. You dog is not a statue and all those people in the windows can distract both the dog and the groomer. So don't tap on the window and do the groomer a favor and watch you dog being groomer from out of the pets sight. Good luck

Do not go to petsmart or petco. I used to work at both groomers and they are not good to the dogs. And the work is usually very crappy. Go to a well established groomers that been around a long time and has groomers that have been grooming for a long time. As groomer, I have about 5 out of 10 new clients tell me their dogs were groomed at petsmart or petco and were really afraid of being grooomed after that experience. My mom took her dog to get a bath once and when he got home he was so freaked out over the experience he bit my parents- he has never done that before. If you love your dog and care for a good experience, DO NOT take him to petsmart or petco!

Int the long-term, it incredibly is extra value-effective to take a place in a reliable set of clippers and learn how to do it your self. in case you haven't any longer have been given a complicated clip completed, this is going to be basic to do your dogs at homestead. in spite of the undeniable fact that, this does require approximately $2 hundred to start you off for basically the clippers and in case you elect different stuff like a grooming table and expert dryer, it incredibly is going to be extra. With a small dogs, you are able to have the means to do issues like bathing and drying, clipping nails, cleansing ears and trimming the ft and bum at homestead by using your self. the significant value may well be shampoo and conditioner, a hair dryer (in case you utilize one, you ought to use that), some scissors, brushes, nail clippers and ear air purifier. this shouldn't value extra that $50 for all of it and could final for a whilst. i might think of that an self sustaining groomer might value decrease than the chain shops, yet some will value extra. It relies upon on the staff they have, products used and the place you reside. look up dogs groomers on your area and contact them approximately pricing. some might have web content with expenses and centers. basic cuts are many times extra value-effective. some will supply a coupon in case you bathe your dogs at homestead and that they only might desire to do the clip. in case you have a grooming college close to you, they might furnish extra value-effective cuts, however the time-honored will variety.

small, local pet shops are best because they offer personal care, cheaper prices, and better service.
