Question:
Common Mutt, or Wild Dog?

We recently adopted a mutt from the humane society. We took him to the vet and asked around. NOBODY can figure out what kind of dog he is. He has a George Clooney 5:00 shadow, amber colored eyes, webbed feet like a lab, slightly turned out front feet like a wild dog, and a super curly tail. Any suggestions would be extremely helpful. And please, I only wanna hear from people that might know what the heck they're talking about. No bs answers for points please. Thanks!

It's so hard to say, but I'd vote for a pure Heinz 57 :).

Seriously, when dogs are the result of several generations of random mixed-breeding, they tend to end up with a shorter, light brown coat and medium build. Look at any of the pariah (stray, semi-feral) dogs that live around various 3rd world communities, or many of the recognized pariah-type "breeds" such as the Canaan Dog, Carolina Dog, Basenji, Australian Dingo, Telomian and New Guinea Singing Dog. Canaans and Basenjis come in other colors but their most common color is a yellowish-reddish color.

Nondescript pariahs that live amongst primitive and 3rd world countries all bear general resemblance to other pariahs in other areas. Generally speaking after generations of random mixed-breeding, the dog's form and type reverts back to that which is most useful for survival- brown, yellow or reddish coat that blends in with grasses and vegetation, medium size for speed, agility and less of a caloric intake need, small, often erect ears and an upright or curled tail.

Not saying he's a pariah or a dingo/feral dog (doesn't quite have the look of anything recognizeable) but quite likely he's the result of a lot of random breeding. He's a pup so it's hard to say for sure- I knew someone with an Akita/Chow mix pup who looked similar to him, so I could be wrong. He might be a cross of just a couple different breeds. Time will tell....he DOES have big paws so he might end up being a bit bigger than "medium sized". Either way, he's a cutie.

I think he has some german shepherd in him, with the coloring of the nose and those ears look like a shepherds. His eyes are the exact same color as my shepherd/malamute mix. His tail doesn't look really curly in these pictures. With the web feet he probably has some lab in him, as well as the sleek coat. The coloring is what makes me think there might be some other breed in there, because it doesn't look like a yellow lab, and it's not shepherd. Maybe golden retriever. Anyway, he is really cute and no matter what breed he is he'll be a great pet and companion, I'm sure. Good luck with him.

The black mouth cur dog does not have ears that stand up, in fact their ears are medium size and hanging. This pups ears are definately going to be up.

I have to agree that it could have some kind of the Chinook in it. The description fits what you were referring to and the color looks right.

I think he is a pit/shepherd mix. His head is wedge-shaped like a pit's, and his eyes look like a GSD's. The ears are very wide at the base like a GSD's also.

Something else is obviously also mixed in to account for the webbed feet. Labradors are most common. He is so cute. He does have an uncanny resemblance to a Chinook, but the Chinooks' ears on the Dogbreedinfo site are nearly perfect triangles.

i doubt it's a wild dog - my friend's corgi has out turned feet with amber colored eyes like a lions (hence his name is leo) however, he's all purebred, just the result of bad breeding. Your dog can be the result of a combination of mixes, the mother dog could've been a mix and so can the sire; therefore, it'll be hard to tell what kind of dog he is. Since he has webbed feet, then of course he's got some water dog in him.

Definitely looks like a shepard mix. I would say some sort of terrier too. There are a few places that do dog DNA tests so you can find out their breed. Here's one http://www.discountpetmedicines.com/dog-dna-test.htm and I think there are a few others too. I would recommend the ones that do a cheek swab so it's gentler on the dog. Good luck! He's super cute!!

That dog looks remarkably like a canine that I saw in Smithsonian Magazine some time ago. It was a "Carolina" breed. What they called it exactly escapes me at the moment, but I am at least 80% certain that your dog is of that breed. Worth looking into. This breed is more often feral than not and very reclusive. I am almost positive of a match.

Indeed...I think they dubbed them the "Carolina Curr".

Good job Wolfie J!

Look under "America's first dogs" or the "American dingo" check the photos for yourself.

Looks like a Chinook puppy, kinda looks like a purebred too. When I first saw it I saw a little GSD, then Chihuahua. Well anyway, I looked up dogs with webbed feet and came up with Chinook. Check this website, you see it as an adult butt scroll down and it looks just like your adorable pup. I'd also suggest DNA testing it looks like the Blackmouth Cur and Chinook.

He's sooo cute. He definitely looks like a lab mix and maybe boxer because of his color and nose. Doesn't look wild though. If you want to have DNA done on him contact your vet and ask him if he does it or if not they can refer you to someone who does. A friend of mine had this done on a supposedly chi-chi she purchase and it ended up being 5 different breeds, none of which were chi-chi. She sued the so called breeder and won.

DSH or DLH which translates to domestic short hair or domestic long hair. In other words, a mixed breed cat. And since the tabby fur pattern is very common, often one calls their cat simply a "tabby." Of course, not all cats are tabbys, and all of mine are designated either DSH or DLH.

He's just a mutt, although a cute one. He definitely is not a wild dog. There aren't any kinds of wild dog that look like that--dingoes look quite different.

You can see pictures of dingos at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Dingo if you want to compare-- really they look more like orange, short-furred husky dogs.

Possible German Shepherd/Corgi mix? He's very cute though, kudos for adopting!

He looks mildly like a Dingo. But he looks more like a mutt, maybe a german shepard/boxer cross or just a good old Heinz 57!

I really doubt he's a wild dog. dogs in the wild attack and kill for food unless it's their own. I would so get a dna test done on him. i know here in california Petsmart does that test for dogs. It's really neat. Google it and see for yourself.

its a yellow cur dog

A black mouth cur dog to be precise.

Why the thumbs down? Its a legit breed!!

And it's probably the breed of the puppy in the pictures. It fits the description, right down to the webbed toes! Get over yourselves people!!

Oh and Thanks Chaz;-)
