Question:
What do you really have against mutts?
2009-12-02 17:03:07 UTC
I've read things on here, and most people are always saying mutts are bad. No they're not! It's not their fault they're a mutt, blame the person who bred it. I love mutts, I think they're so cute.
But what do you people who are constantly saying they're bad and to get a purebred, really have against them?

Mutts aren't bad, and I don't hate mutts, but I have a HUGE problem with breeding them intentionally for profit. The ONLY time it is okay to breed mutts is when breeding quality working dogs (sled, farm etc) and dogs are bred for specific beneficial traits. The rest of the time, only responsible breeders breeding purebreds should breed because we want to maintain health and quality in the breeds we have and have so many homeless dogs that breeding more without a purpose is unnecessary.

My dog is a purebred but I've no problems with mutts. Infact I didn't adopt my dog based on the fact that she was a purebred, I would have still adopted her had she been a mix. Mutts are adorable and in my experience have great personalities. I think people have a preference for purebreds because you can be sure of their genetics, lineage, know give or take what they will look like, what kind of temperament they'll have, etc (of course, we are considering responsible and reputable breeders here). One can generalize that mixed breeds are bred by irresponsible people who have not checked genetics, among other things, which can lead to sick puppies or dogs that die at a young age from undiagnosed defects.

I don't however like designer dogs (ie the people whom breed them). I find the need for over priced mutts which were bred merely for their looks (no benefit to the bred) irresponsible (puppy mills and BYB).

I don't think any regular here has said that mutts are bad. What we do have a problem with is greeders intentionally breeding mutts and stupid people spending hundreds of $$$ on mutt puppies from these greeders.

I personally prefer the predictable traits that come with purebreds. I like to know size, energy level, exercise requirements, coat length etc... You don't have that with mutts, but I don't have a problem with them. If I were in a situation where I could adopt another dog, it would probably be a mutt.

I love mutts. But 99% of those cute adorable mutts and designer mutts come from a horrible environment called Puppy Mills.large breeding facilities that keep dogs in tiny cages, and consistently breed non stop, they are half starved-Just feed enough food for the pups to grow and be sold, and the mother to keep breeding, no vet care, no vacination, dirty poo and urine filled cages and no Human attention. This is the daily life of those adorable mutts. There are reason there alway so cute-Cute dogs make more MONEY. All puppy mill are after is $$$$$$ and letting animals suffer-it cruel industry. Don't get me wrong puppy mill do breed also purebred dogs. They do not care about the welfare or the safety, they just use the dogs to make as much $$$$ as possible, the parents are NOT genetically health tested prior to breeding. Yes puppy mill will be dogs with arthritist, blindness, aggression, and joint issues. So when you think about it; How can a crossbred or mutt be healthy being raised in such a horrid environment? And buying from such as place may seem like a good idea, but you know if you buy a dog from this-you be given profit to the industry and making them breed more dogs to be sold for more $$$$$$$. This is why time and time again you see people say Do not ship a dog, Do not buy from a petshop and do not buy from a puppy mill and do NOT buy a teacup, micro or extreme tiny from a breeder because there are also puppy mills or from puppy mills.

That why we say buy from a reptuable breeder or rescue shelter. However there are no reptuable breeders of MUTTS. Don't think all puppy mill live in cages. Some puppy mill are open-actually a few in australia, But the conditions are still horrible

Now do you understand why we don't like the way mutts are bred and why would you want to support these cruel industries?

Now examples of puppy mills-most will have combination of mutts and purebreds. Don't believe the claims they make about Poodle x being low shedding. Most Poodle x shed like any other dog. They lie to make more money. These are puppy mills. Please avoid these breeders. Many will say statement on there website "We are not puppy mills" When in reality they are.

THis just a few i've found. Many many more.

Some puppy mill/petshops will make claims that there pet come rescue situations. When they don't-the reality is they come from puppy millls. How they can get away with it unbelievable.

There are only a few they are genuine petshop/animal shelter adoptions

I have never had anything against mutts, but after having so many of them for years, I decided to get a purebred. I wouldn't change my poodle for the world, I don't think I'm going back to having mutts, I just want more poodles now.

It really doesn't matter if a dog is a purebred or not, they are all different & special in their own way.

I don't think most people have a problem with mutts. I think it's more with the people who breed them and those who feed into the mutt frenzy by buying them from BYB's. Keep in mind how you keep hearing about HYBRID dogs. They are nothing more than expensive mutts. I think when people go on and are angry about others asking questions about these supposed hybrids, people get angry because we feel that those that are interested are just supporting those BYBs and puppy mills that are cruelly using their animals as puppy machines and forget about what they are really meant to be, a family member. When I look at questions about "what kind of hybrid should I get?", many of the dog lovers get angry, because many of us really care about our dogs and feel you should always get a dog from a shelter and save a life, not support the breeders that cause the overpopulation problems. I myself have two beautiful mutts. Our older dog is an 8 1/2 yr old pit bull mix, that was thrown out of a moving car by our house. My husband saw it happen and brought him home. Our small dog is a tiny mutt, he is a true heinz 57, all we know is that his momma was half italian greyhound and chihuahua. He came from a shelter. I think it's safe to say that most dog lovers, love the mutts, but dislike irresponsible breeders.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with mutts. I have one of my own and I plan on adopting another one from the shelter when I am ready for my next dog.

The problem isn't with mutts, they are great dogs. The problem is people buying mutts from people breeding them on purpose. If everyone adopted a mutt that would be wonderful.

The mutts aren't the problem its the people breeding them

No, we don't say mutts are bad. Mutts are awsome. Bad, are the greedy little idiots who want to breed them to produce more mutts, give them a doodle-poo name and sell them for outrageous prices, while millions of dogs are euthnaised everyday due to the over-population in shelters. And they are mutts like the others. But it seems a mutt is a filthy, dirty animal, but once you stick on it a fancy name, it becomes clean and cute. BYB's are "très chic" to our world's society, unfortunatley... And so popular that a BYB is a Top Contributer on the Dog's Section.

Here's an example of BYB more near than you think... https://answersrip.com/question/index?qid=20081027144144AA2eAol

EDIT: Uh-oh, here comes the TD fairy... I wonder what coward BYB gave it to me...

Who here has been saying mutts are bad ? I swear some of ya'll really have some sort of complex. This question has been asked more than it's fair share of times, and we all say the same answers.

Nobody here hates mutts or has anything againist them. I have had mutts all my life and loved each and every one of them.

What I DO have a problem with are people who intentionally breed them and charge an insane amount for a dog you can find at your local shelter for $50.

3/4 of the people that others think are "insulting" or "putting down" mutts - happen to either own mutts themselves, or wouldn't mind owning a mutt if given the chance and the resources.

They, myself included, aren't "hating" on the dogs themselves - but rather the ignorant BYBs and Puppy Mills that are breeding them and making their dogs look better than the millions of shelter mutts being euthanized annually.

I don't think many people have anything against mutts, personally the only reason I have purebred dogs is that they were bred for specific purposes and have distinct personalities that I love in each of them, as well as a certain look. However, I have a Labrador Retriever who I swear is crossed with a Rottweiler (we adopted her, so I doubt she is purebred) and I love her just the same as my Basset Hound who is CKC registered. Personally, to me, mutts or whatever you want to call them are generally healthier dogs and have the advantage most of the time of not have genetic disease and hereditary conditions that come with purebred dogs. For example, my Basset is more than likely going to have joint problems some stage into his life, I have him on supplements to help with this, but it is just a factor in his breed, as is bloat which is a major life threatening condition. Mutts, generally live longer than purebred dogs, I have nothing against them, I just like certain breeds of dogs thats all.

N-O-B-O-D-Y here has anything against mutts.

I'm %100 FINE with mutts. Mutts is simply a term here, not an insult.

I AM, however, %100 against the deliberate BREEDING of mutts.

I'm against people buying mutts from "Breeders", who are nothing more than BYBs.

BYB=Bad.

Deliberate Breeding of Mutts= Bad

Mutts=Good!

Mutts here= Term, so don't get offended.

I think you've misunderstood.

We DO blame the breeders, and the people who support those breeders. No one here has anything against mutts themselves. Some do prefer the predictability of purebreds, but that doesn't mean anyone dislikes mutts.

I do not have a thing against mutts, I have one curled up on the bed next to me right now.

My problem is the people and the "breeders" that try to convince people that a snickerdoddle is a pure bred dog when it is nothing more than a mutt.

As with any dog problem it is the people, not the dog.

You're totally making that up, or you don't bother trying to comprehend what you read. I've never seen a single person say that. You're just on the defensive because you've chosen to purchase an intentionally bred mutt while thousands are put to death in shelters every day. My favorite all time dog was a mutt & I will miss him forever. I read your previous question and did not see ONE answer that said that mutts were bad. Whether you choose to acknowledge it or not YOU are part of the problem. No BYB would be breeding these mixes if they didn't have a bunch of fools willing to pay top dollar for them

You already answered your own question. People are mad at the ignorant backyard breeders that insist on bringing more unwanted and unhealthy mutts into the world. It's not the dogs people are mad at. It's the owners.

For the 4,008,895,999 time today...NO ONE HAS A PROBLEM WITH MUTTS...Not one regular on this section does. Some regulars chose not to own mutt for whatever reason it might be, but no one is bashing them...

The only thing I can think of, is the designer mutts with stupid - *** names that get passed on as "real" breeds

It is the intentional breeding of mutts that I am against.

No one with a brain has anything against mutts.

- We have a problem with those who BREED them

- We have problems with the poorly constructed argument that mutts are healthier and better

- We have a problem with the stupid designer names given to them to convince the ignorant that they are a real breed

- WE have a problem with people charging thousands of dollars for mutts.

No, alot of people have a problem with American Pitbull terriers. NOT mutts. unless you are talking about those stupid FAD mutts:

cockapoo

Morkies

Labradoodle

ect.....

I find them to be mutts and annoying fad at that!!!

used only to make more money for the BYBr's

I personally love mutts but not FAD mutts

People who hate mutts don't really love dogs.

I don't really understand them either.

People that obsessive about purebreds are just stuck up.

It's one thing to care about a particular breed, it's something else all together to say that some dogs are inferior to others.
