Im getting a rottweiler/lab mix in a couple of days. I would be able to pick him up tomorrow Saturday which is 5 days short of him turning 7 weeks old. Only reason i want to take him is because i have the next couple of days off so i would be able to spend time with him. Would it be ok or is it still to soon to take him away from mom n litter mates?

Definitely too soon. You are going to get berated on here about back yard breeders but you can ignore those statements.

Here is what I would do. Wait another week or two until it is 8 or 9 weeks old to eat and learn from the mother a little more then take him home. While this might seem too young still it is probably the best age to take the puppy away from back yard breeders(or people who breed dogs in their back yard and sell them) due to the fact that they rarely care for the well being of the pup or do not try hard enough by doing what all other legitimate breeders do such as making regular vet visits, vaccinate, deworm and so on.

I was given a husky puppy for my birthday by a friend who purchased it from a back yard breeder. I found out yesterday that all his litter mates(aka brothers and sisters) are now dead making him the only survivor and I am sure they died from a bacterial infection that went untreated. I know this because my vet caught it on my puppy when I took him in for a visit the day after I received him allowing me to give him medicine for it. I have had this puppy for over 5 weeks now and I developed a strong bond with him. I find it sad that had he not been given to me early(around 7-8 weeks) he most likely could be dead right now...I basically saved its life by getting it early. I told my friend to tell the breeder after I found about the infection and she said she told him in return yet here is my puppy basically the last one of his litter. Hope I helped and good luck.

A puppy may be weaned at 4 weeks of age but that doesn't mean it is ready to go home, the next 4 weeks is crucially for the puppy to socialize. No puppy should go home before 8 weeks of age. There are lots of breeders who keep puppies till about 10-12 weeks. The puppies learn a lot from each other and mom take away too soon and you cOuld end up with a bad temperament dog.

The dog will survive, but he'll miss out on some important lessons he could be getting. At that young age, he'll barely be able to walk across the room with out tripping over his own feet. He'll alternate 2 hours of play and 2 hours of sleep, pretty much round the clock for several more days.

I picked up my latest pup at 6 1/2 weeks, it was summertime so I invited a middle-school age nephew to dog-sit 24 hours a day for the first 10 days. He's a great dog, but I wish he'd had the socialization those 10 days in the litter -- he's got a serious leash reactivity problem. We'll work through it ok, but it is a hassle.

remember, at 6 weeks of age, one week is 17% of his life, and 2 weeks is a full 1/3 ... I'm saying 5 days makes a big difference at that age. I mean, it really is a noticeable change from week six to week 7.

No its not ok - wait till the pup is between 8 and 9 weeks old. A few days off is not gonna make any kind of impact. You still will need to take the pup outside every 2-3 hours to potty and crate when the pup is not being supervised inside.
