The dog was a great dane black lab mix. 4 years old. 200 pounds. Since last night he wouldnt sit or lay down and was panting/drooling very heavy. Today he was just laying down panting heavy and was staring into space. He got up and went outside very shakily then he just sat and layed down. He was staring into space panting heavy and couldnt move. He wouldnt react to anything and his breathing got very quiet. He was rushed to the vet but his breathing was very low and quiet. What could have caused this?

Sounds like bloat(gastric torsion). The larger the dog is, the greater the risk of bloat, and bloat will kill a dog very quickly, sometimes even in a matter of a few hours.

I'm very sorry for your loss. If you see any of the same early signs in any pets in the future, please get vet care immediately.

I'd guess bloat. Or possibly he died as a complication to being morbidly obese. A 200 lb Lab/Dane mix is HUGE, and not in a good way.

I don't think you'll know unless you have the vet do a necropsy. Had he been my dog I would have taken him to the Emergency Vet last night or at least first thing this morning if he was in that kind of stress. The vet may have been able to help him.

Your vet is in a better position to tell you what could have caused his death than we are....did the vet say he may have lived if he'd been seen last night when he first started acting oddly??? My first thought was poison, but that's just a guess...

I am so sorry.

Your dog probably died of bloat, not a nice way to go.

Sounds like he bloated. A very terrible way to die.

My guess would be bloat.
