I'm considering buying a yellow lab puppy (only 7 weeks old). I already have a 9 year old mini daschund. Will they get along? Both are males.

Thanks in advance!

Being an owner of both Dachshunds and Labradors I will do my best to help you with this. These are the questions you need to answer:

1) Is my 9 year old Dachshund dog friendly?

2) Is my 9 year old Dachshund active?

3) Does my Dachshund have any arthritis, back issues or overweight?

Because:

1) A large breed puppy (such as a Labrador) is very playful, nippy and has no idea how much they weigh or that he can hurt or even seriously injure an older Dachshund.

2) The puppy will want to play, play, play. If the Dachshund does not want to play, play, play then the puppy will become a nuisance to your existing dog.

3) A Labrador grows fast. A Labrador usually retains it's high level of activity for years; the need for serious exercise every day including obedience training.

What you have to decide if this is a good thing for your older small breed dog and for YOU.

Think it through.

Most dachshunds are great at getting along with other dogs that are not aggressive. A 9 year old dachshund is going to be verrrrrrrry settled in to your home and will not enjoy a large, rowdy puppy invading it's space.

Dachshunds are prone to back injury and only bed jumping could be worse than being rolled by a puppy 3, 4, 5 and eventually 8 to 10 times his size. Plan on constant supervision until the lab is 6 or 7 years old and settles down a bit. If it were the other way around I would say your experience would go better. Depends on the temperament of the dogs and your willingness to train and supervise. The doxie is going to get hurt...how bad depends on you.

Hi,

All dogs are prone to not getting along and to being the best pals in the world. No one can tell for sure. It's like saying will my 9 year old son get along with a younger brother? It all depends on them.

Labs are the cutest most adorable little things and i encourage you to get one! (from a reputable breeder only, of course.) And daschunds are quite fiesty but my best friend's 5 year old mini daschund gets along great with my 8 week old golden retreiver puppy. They just needed to be introduced properly : look on the net for ways to introduce puppies to older dogs.

Pretty much, what im saying here is go for it. All dogs CAN get along, it's just fate that decides if the do.

Well it all depends on how social the dachshund is if it is a very social dachshund then they should get a long fine but if hes not the chances are slim but if you get the lab introduce them both on leashes just in case and let one at a time sniff each other and keep them on the leash until your confident that they will get along

It is impossible for us to know this. To would suggest that you talk to the breeder of the Lab. Reputable breeders are wonderful resources of knowledge on behavior and introducing new puppies to existing dogs. Your vet is also a good resource for this. I would suggest seeing how your Dach is going to feel about a new puppy BEFORE you commit to a new puppy.

Don't know, since your dog is 9, he might not like someone else in his home. Go on this site www.pettube.com

Not likely, why would you get such a large pup when you have a small dog - not fair to the older dog at all.
