We recently lost our dog marley, (a white german shephard golden retriver mix) some evil person ran her over on pourpose on our own property. but we realy miss having a dog. now we live in a appartment and we want to get a small lap dog. were not sure on which little dog would be good for us. its a huge change for us because we have always had large dogs (german shephards). our neighbor has this little shih tzu. we love it because its so spastic. my dad is a long haul truck driver and wants to take the dog with him on the road. so we need to know what dog is good for us. we need a breed of dog that is okay to travel alot...and be a lapdog. it needs to be like a toy/small breed due to the appartment and truck. so we did some research on http://www.terrificpets.com/ thank you all for your help.

If you liked the Shih tzu why not choose that breed? They are good companion dogs and don't need a lot of exercise, so would be good for spending lots of time on the road. They aren't 'yappers' and shed less than many other breeds. The only down side for you may be that they will require more grooming than some other dogs.

The other breeds I would recommend taking a closer look at: Bichon Frise, Pug, and Toy Poodle.

I personally wouldn't recommend the Jack Russell as I think it would have too much energy and not be happy couped up in a vehicle.

As always, look into your local shelter for something that may be a perfect match!

My heart goes out to you for your loss. I just can't understand how people can be so cruel and heartless to animals. It's a shame when you have to worry about things happening on your own property, what is this world coming to! I'm happy to hear that you are going to give another dog a good home with love, even though you suffered a loss you still have a big heart full of love to give to another. As far as what kind of small dog would be good for you, I tend to lean towards chihuahua's only because we have had 4 of them and our lives were filled with joy and love. We lost one of them to congestive heart failure we were told by a vet, but I tend to disagree with what he said. We took our chihuahua to the vet because he wasn't acting right and the vet did nothing to help him. He said he was going to keep him awhile to observe him and when we got home he called and said he had passed away. He had never been sick a day in his life of 6 years so I blame the vet for his death. He didn't even bother to ask if we wanted to pick him up so we could bury him, he was just going to dispose of him. My husband went to pick him up and he was in a garbage bag just like trash would be! He was the most loving and affectionate dog anyone could ask for. A lot of people think that chihuahua's are mean and bark all the time but they are wrong. It's like rotties and pit bulls are always thought of as mean but its all the way they are raised and treated. If you treat a dog meanly they will react in that way, they are just like children you have to treat them with love and care for them in a gentle and kind manner. Dog spelled backwards is God so that right there tells you how any dog will be if treated right. We also have a toy dachshund and she is the cutest and well mannered dog that loves to sit on your lap and cuddle. Now a jack russell terrier is a good dog but they tend to be hyper in nature and bark alot because we have a mixed breed of jack russell and applehead chihuahua and he is pretty active but is also a very loving dog and will sit on your lap but is a medium size not as small as a toy. We also have a chihuahua that is just a little bit bigger than a teacup and she just loves to cuddle and lay by you. Whatever breed you choose, take some time before making a final decision and see how the dog reacts around you and your family and how you take to the dog. I think that whatever breed you finally decide on will be fine and give you plenty of unconditional love just remember to have patience with a smaller dog because sometimes they tend to need more attention, and if you happen to get an older dog ask questions about the behavior and likes and dislikes so you can develope a good relationship. Good luck and may you have many years of happiness and love together!

I'm curious as to what happened. Usually people keep their cars on the road when driving.

Go to the shelters and see what's up for adoption. http://petfinder.com/ If you want to know about specific breeds, type in (Breed) Club of America.

I highly recommend a Jack Russell Terrier. They're super-smart dogs. I had one and he was such fun. Great with kids, too.

I'd recommend cats over dogs - if you want something that will be independent as well as cuddly you should try getting your hands on of these spectacular cats:
