Hi everyone, I'm getting a puppy shar-pei on 9th March. Its a little girl.
I'm just wondering about any information you kind people may be able to give or help me on.
I already have a 10year old labradorxjackrussel and 2 guinea pigs.

I've never had a shar-pei before, so would just like some info before i get her, so that i can prepare.
Thanks in advance.

Honestly, since you are actively trying to have a baby I do NOT think this is the breed to bring into your life at this time. (Based on all your other questions and your screen name TTC= Trying to Conceive)

Research other breeds.

Shar Peis ARE not a breed to have around little children.

Every website states this.

A Chinese Shar Pei may not be right for you.

If I were considering a Chinese Sharpei...

My major concerns would be:

Aggression toward strangers. Many Chinese Shar Peis have protective instincts toward strangers. They need extensive exposure to friendly people so they learn to recognize the normal behaviors of "good guys." Then they can recognize the difference when someone acts abnormally. Without careful socialization, they may be suspicious of everyone, which can lead to biting.

If you have small children, I do not recommend a Chinese Shar Pei. There are just too many Sharpeis who won't tolerate any nonsense.

I used to raise Shar-Pei puppies, and the previous claims are not true in every case.

Yes, they are aggressive dogs, and they usually go for the throat of other dogs. HOWEVER, before everybody flips out and starts whining, they are usually gentle around children. At least mine were. AGAIN, I AM SPEAKING FROM MY OWN EXPERIENCES WITH THIS BREED!!!

A few things you should know: Number one, they are very thin skinned dogs, so they cannot be left outside when it is really cold. Number two, most don;t live past the age of five or six due to what is called Shar-Pei Fever. Number three, if you are wanting to get this female dog to begin raising puppies, you will need to find a male dog that can put her on the ground, because they are VERY aggressive towards male Shar-Pei dogs. If he can't beat her, he can't breed her basically. Also, their toenails will have to be trimmed by a vet. None of this Pedi-Paws stuff, because a Shar-Pei's toenails are very tender and will grow back into their paws if not trimmed properly, or they will become ingrown and that is never fun to deal with. You can check out the American Kennel Club website and they will be able to tell you more. This is just some stuff I remember from having them myself.

Grats on your new pup! But...

...You should've read/researched about this breed before even deciding to get her.

A Shar Pei isn't an unpredictable LabraJack mutt.

Here's some website on some info about them -

congrats on your new pup. Do get her the proper training and socialization. Shar pei's tendto be dominant and need to be trained. Here is some more info and some pictures of puppies and other people's shar pei's.

Not being mean or anything, but you should have done some research before you considered getting her. But at least you are asking for information.

You should reconsider this breed if it doesn't fit your lifestyle.

All breeds are different & have their own pros & cons.
