They can be excellent family dogs...

All just depends what you are looking for, and if thier size and upkeep will fit into your home. Every dog is different..and its your job to assess the sire and dame, as well as individual pups in the litter for temperment qualities that you are looking for.

Companion lines do best in a family home...they are still decent gaurd dogs but lack drive and aptitude for serious work.

Working lines do best in a working environment with a competent handler..these dogs usually do NOT do well in a family environment, but there's always exceptions.

**It sounds like a pet quality corso would suit your family and your needs just fine. Consider a mature corso at adoption..often these make the BEST pets! Go for a female..try petfinder.com best of luck.

hope this helps

Yes they are. They are the most wonderful dog breed around. They are docile around children, making them a very good family pet, but fierce if the home is in danger.

I do want to point out that there aren't any "worthy" American Cane Corso breeders (there is only ONE that I love to death and he is an awesome person and breeder). All the Cane Corso breeders here in America (except the one that I love) don't know how to breed for the true Cane Corso. They are normally VERY blocky, short and stocky, in America. They are NOT meant to look like an American Bully.

For the price you'd be paying for a Cane Corso in America, you can a much better, true Italian Cane Corso.

If you'd like, you can message me and I can give you two breeder's URLs. They are very worthy Cane Corso breeders, one being in America and the other in Italy.

But all in all, they are an AMAZING dog. The only true coursing mastiff.

EDIT: Any dog can be a dangerous dog. And they are not "as" banned as the Pit is. Like said, American breeders want the Corso to look like a Pitbull/American Bully and they treat them the same way; ie fighting and aggression. Going to a reputable breeder WILL prevent that. Even if you choose an American breeder, do make sure that they health and temperment test their dogs.

And also, with ANY dog, you MUST have a "firm" hand and train and socilaze the dog from Day 1.

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Read more here https://tr.im/uwPmA

The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don’t achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren’t putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.

The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.

Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.

The Cane Corso is a great guard dog, extremely loyal to its family and quite aloof with strangers. They are easy to train, generally good with children, and calm with their primary guardians. The Cane Corso is normally a quiet dog, barking only when alerted to a strange situation. Despite the breeds size they make excellent house dogs and are very athletic. This breed needs lots of socialization at a early age begin socialization at 8 weeks old. Puppy Kindergarten is good for this breed with puppy Kindergarten it will learn to interact with adults, children and other dogs, as well as learn basic obedience (sit, down, come and stay). It’s basically a good way for you an your puppy to get off on the right foot and have a successful relationship.

This will serve to keep you established as the pack leader. The Cane Corso bonds quickly to his family and becomes quite attached especially to the children. They enjoy being included in the family activities. Corsos make excellent house or apartment dogs however keep in mind the dog requires daily exercise. But they love their family and are very affectionate and as long as they are raised with kids and are trained and socialized this is one good dog breed! :)

If you are thinking about getting this Breed you can message me and i will be happy to find you a good reasonable breeder near you! :)

Hope this Helps!! :)

Anna02w- It is obvious that you do not know the Cane Corso breed. High prey drive??? It sounds like you are trying to imply a cane will attack a baby just because they have a high pitch squeal!? This is complete nonsense.Canes are far removed from their gladiator days. They have been used as herding dogs and to catch boar among other things more recently. And they are catch and HOLD dogs not catch and KILL.

Also: To BYB Tom, Dick- A boxer is no better than a cane corso as a family dog. There have been many, many attacks by boxers on children. Most not severe but they are almost always on the face. This attack happened by where I live just recently.

I can tell you from personal experience that the Cane Corso breed is an exceptional family dog as well as a loyal and protective guard dog. I have a 2yr old and 4yr old and my canes are as patient and trustworthy as one could expect a dog to be.The following is not meant to persuade you against this breed but to give a sense of reality if having this breed around kids: A lot really depends on how the dog is raised and that goes for all breeds. If they are going to be around kids then they need to be raised from a puppy with kids and you need to make sure the pup never gets cornered, pinched or swatted at by a child to the point where the pup is frightened or you may end up with a dog that dislikes kids and bites out of fear. If you have dogs and kids together the kids must learn how to respect and be nice to the dog and vise versa. You must be prepared to never leave them unattended. This is a big comittment. It is very easy to just go in the house for a few minutes and leave the kids and dog in the yard or turn your back to cook dinner and not watch. Kids move fast and can take a treat from the dog or pinch it. A dog such as a cane corso has huge jaws and it capable of inflicting serious damage. If you heed that warning however, and are prepared to extensively socialize and train the dog then they really can be fantastic with kids. They are large and solid dogs but they do seem aware of their size and dont tend to jump on kids but they may accidentally knock a kid over or step on them. Keep in mind that your child will never be able to safely walk any dog of this size no matter how well trained. It is not a dog that a child 10 or younger can really play with either. A misplaced tooth can cause major bruising and pain. The dog will be for YOU and your spouse, not for the kids but it will be a great protector of the kids. This may be bad if your child has a friend over and they wrestle. The dog could percieve it's child to be in danger and attck the other child. You need to have an area to put the dog away from kids if you cannot be watching them together if you have young children. A cane will bond to the entire family as long as everyone spends time with the dog and not just one person.

My canes are very accepting of strangers and wag their tails and bat their paws to get more pats but seem to instinctively react to a person who may be a threat ie: holding something over their head, drunk ect and sometimes just don't like a certain person.Cane Corsos are a breed that can love their whole family, accept people into their home that their owner accepts but still be ready to protect their love ones at all costs at any time.

I am a proud owner of a 1 yr. old Cane Corso. In the past I have owned German Shepherds and Chihuahuas, so I didn t really know what to expect. I definitely agree that they are NOT for 1st time dog owners. They require

socialization and training the minute you bring them home. You need to establish who the pack leader is, and never, ever, play tug of war with them if you don t think you re going to win. Unless they re fully trained of course. Otherwise they will constantly challenge you. Don t kid yourself, I am amazed at how intelligent he is! They are very protective of everyone in their pack, especially the children. Be very careful when friends are over. Never allow them to wrestle. My dog is always on guard, loving, loyal, sweet and gentle.

Mess with his pack, so help you god!

This is not a dog for the average pet owner, certainly not as a family dog.

While there may be reliable breeders, most breed for size and power, not temperament, and this breed is unreliable in the extreme.

Even if you get a good natured dog, you abosolutely need to devote an enormous amount of time to socializing the dog and training it. Many communities have banned cane corsos- and for good reason, the instability of the temperaments coupled with the power of the dog make it a dangerous weapon.

Unless you absolutely know where to get a dog with reliable temperament and plan to learn a great deal about training and socializing this breed, you have absolutely no business even thinking about getting one. This is one of the few breeds that I wouldn't touch - and I have never had a fear of any dog, rottweilers, dobeys, or pits - all better choices than cane corsos if you want a powerful dog.

There just aren't enough reliable breeders, or reliable bloodlines, to warrant taking a chance with a cane corso.

Hi I am a Certified Professional Dog Trainer and Kennel Manager I read your question and would like to say that Cane Corso's are not a dog for the adverage dog owner. They can be good dogs when owned by professional handlers but I do not recommend them for the adverage household just because you would like a good guard dog.

Believe me I know dogs any dog will bark and let you know when there is someone outside your house or at your door or even stop an unwanted intruder you do not need this specific breed to do this. Now If you were looking at this breed because you thought they looked tough there are plenty of better choices that would be much better family dogs and still look the tough guy part. Like a well bred Pit Bull pit bulls are great family dogs and have that tough guy look I've seen more aggressive golden retrievers in my 8 years of experience than pits. Also bull dogs are great family dogs and still have that look boxers as well American Saffordshire Terriers are good dogs when trained as well even labs are good alrert dogs please I only ask that you really think about your choice of breed and rethink your reasons for getting this breed.

Cane Corso's were bread to be gladiator dogs they were used as entertainment in the ancient ampitheaters the would fight and kill anything that was released into the ring with them MAN OR BEAST.

They have an extreamly high prey drive espeically if they hear a noise like a high pitch baby squeal that to them could sound like a wounded animal or even young children playing sometimes yell or scream in high pitches. Also there is the chase drive that is bread into these dogs young children runing away for example from this dog would not be a good picture these are bread to do spicific jobs and unfortunetly that was not including family life .

Now I't not saying that Cane Corso's are bad dogs or that there has never ever been one that has been a family dog I just caution you about getting one just because I've seen first hand what these dogs are capeable of and believe me by the time it get to that point and you come to a Professional Trainer like myself for help damage has aready been done and if your lucky you won't have a lawsuit on your hands from a neighbor or your kids friends parents.

Cane Corsos can be great dogs, for a strong experienced owner who has a ton of time to train them, work them, and control them.

Here's some good info on owning one - to start. http://amorecanecorsos.com/Corsi.html

Cane Corsos are also a heavily banned dog and can have severe temperament issues. I would not consider them a good family dog unless your children are on a very very tight leash and will not mess with the dog.

Extensive training is needed with this breed. And extensive upkeep on that training as well. If you dno't know about the breed and your two interests are "family dog" and "guard dog", I would not recommend this dog to you.

Get a female boxer from a good breeder instead.

I agree with you my, brother has one and she is 11 yrs old. They are very protective of the family and your right about their size, sometimes they are not aware of their size and at times your feet can get clawed up from them stepping on them or your leg can get scratch up from them playfully trying to jump up on you. As far as kids my brother has three and he never had any problems or incidents involving the kids, but I agree, when you discipline them you will have to put them in another room or they will get crazy excited. But overall they are great! guard dogs and laid back dogs.
