i found a lady in Florida who has a litter, she has two ckc register siberian huskies. She is not a professional breeder, she said she was trying to get a red and white puppy but she keeps getting gray and white. She is selling the puppy for 250..is this a good thing or not?

Heres the pic of the puppy.

This is a baaaaad breeder. Do not support her by buying one of her puppies. Is she just going to continue making more dogs until she gets the color she wants? Very likely, by not buying this puppy you will not be the one enabling her to keep breeding dogs. She is one of the reasons we are in such a crisis of petoverpopulation.

No. This is a bad thing. Do not support a 'backyard breeder' like this woman. Firstly CKC, in Florida, would be the Continental Kennel Club, a sham registry that is really no guarantee that the puppy is even purebred. They do not require verifiable parentage and will register anything if two people sign a statement saying it 'appears' purebred. They are the refuge of backyard breeders and puppy mills who breed irresponsibly and without regard to the quality of their dogs. Either that puppy's parents came from equally irresponsible breeders, or came from a breeder who thought they were unsuitable to be bred and sold them on a limited registration and spay/neuter contract, which would make the puppies unregisterable with AKC. But CKC doesn't care if a responsible breeder thought they were worthy of being bred or not, so they'll register the puppies with no questions asked. Dogs should be bred as close to standard as possible, with health and temperament being the important traits, NOT color. Anyone breeding specifically and primarily to get a particular color is not someone I would want to purchase a dog from ever.

Very cute puppy!

By CKC, does she mean Continental Kennel Club (unreputable) or the Canadian Kennel Club (reputable)? Ask her that the next time you speak with her.

Grey and white is a perfectly acceptable color according to AKC and the Canadian Kennel Club.

It doesn't sound as if this breeder quite knows what she is doing if she can't get the color she wants, but if the puppy seems to be of good quality and is healthy, I'd say go for it.

Examine this puppy's eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. Make sure they are clean and free of discharge. Make sure the puppy is active. Stay away from puppies who lie down or sleep.

If you're planning on spaying or neutering your new puppy, why not try adopting? Shelter dogs are generally up to date with shots and have already been spayed/neutered (but some shelters jump the gun and fix before six months which is too early, so be careful).

Instead of buying a puppy, why don't you consider getting a rescue dog? Not sure where in Florida you are located but take a look at the following link:

http://www.sibrescue.com/adoptions.html

or check out www.petfinder.com and put in your zip code and what breed in which you are interested.

If your heart is really set on getting a puppy from a breeder, this woman does not sound like a responsible one. Look for a breeder that is AKC certified. Also, look for breeders who sell for pets only and have a spay or neuter agreement. They should also have their hips OFA certified and eyes checked for any defects. Responsible breeders selectively breed to make sure that the pups are genetically sound to ensure the quality of the breed. Responsible breeders generally look for spay or neuter contracts to ensure their lines won't be back-yard bred. If you are worried about the lineage of your pup, responsible breeders can provide you with papers on your animal, but they should be AKC limited registration; basically proves the line of the animal but does not give you breeding rights. These pups will be more money, but you are paying for a quality animal.

Honestly, though I would seriously consider a rescue animal first. There are so many good dogs out there that would love to find their furever home and most rescue dogs already come housetrained, crate trained, UTD on shots and fixed. Definitely something to consider and you would be helping an animal in need :)

Best of Luck!

I'd stay away from this breeder.

Most likely this is Continental KC.. which means she has poor quality animals. CKC is a scam puppy mill registry.. NO reputable breeder uses them.

Not likely her dogs are being shown or genetic health tested either.

Breeding for color indicates she's not a good breeder.. reputable breeders breed for health, temperment, conformation and work ability.. not color.

She obviously doesnt know enough about genetics either if she's unable to get the color she wants.

Irresponsible breeder.. stay clear.

No!! It is very obvious a byb breeder w/o a clue. The CKC as in Continental Kennel club is a sham registry & is meaningless.

Do you mean continental kennel club?? IF so that is NOT the official registry for dogs in the USA. The AKC is the official registry for purebred dogs in USA.

If she can't figure out color genetics, it sounds like she doesn't know what she is doing -- run.

eta-- all puppies are cute!! Make sure a breeder is a good one BEFORE you look at pictures. It makes it easier to make a WISE decision

save your money and either adopt from a huskey rescue or buy from a reputable breeder. the ckc is a back yard breeder and puppy mill registry. the lady in fl is a back yard breeder without a clue. please do not support byb's.

If she was going for a certain color pattern or color and is not getting it, then she has not done her "homework" when it comes to breeding. U have to have the red color in the background of BOTH parents to get red puppies. Only U know if U can afford that price. If it was me I would not pay that. There are too many purebred husky pups that need to be adopted, and the price would be cheaper. Try Petfinder.com

Well shes not a reputable breeder. CKC is a crap registry unless its Canadian kennel club which i highly doubt it is. And reputable breeders do not breed for color they breed to better the breed.

So know i would not buy from her, she is a BYB.

It definitely does not sound like she knows what she is doing. I think you should find a different breeder. One that knows what they are doing. If you are going to spend the money for a good dog, by god you should get one. Cute puppy though.

I'd steer clear, but that's just me.

It's your money and it will be your dog!
