Ask her to tell you about the good/funny times she has had with her dog. Positive memories help. And do what you are doing, just listen to her.

Sad to hear! It's good that she called you. That means she feels comfortable telling you her feelings. Tell her to go to this website, and call the number if she wants to talk to people who can help console her. They are great at answering questions and just listening in general.
